MMDA downplays transport strike

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) downplayed the impact of a transport strike launched by progressive groups despite claims of victory by the transport groups. Despite a lack of public utility vehicles (PUVs), particularly jeepneys, during certain periods, the MMDA claimed that the strike failed to paralyze the transportation system. The agency deployed vehicles to carry stranded commuters and reported 2,645 passengers rode a total of 686 "assets" during the first day of the strike. Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte praised the MMDA for being "more than prepared" to address the effects of the strike. The LTFRB chairman assured protesting groups that the agency would be "lenient on the suspension of franchises." The MMDA also announced that the expanded number coding scheme would be enforced despite an earlier warning that the transport strike would last until tomorrow. Transport groups claimed victory as 85% of major routes in Metro Manila were paralyzed on the first day of the strike, which they said would continue until tomorrow.
