SR is responsible for D-Ser production in vivo and a specific gene called CG8129 encodes this protein in Drosophila. To investigate the role of D-Ser, researchers generated flies with a deleted version of the sr gene (srko) and found that these flies had reduced nighttime sleep duration compared to normal flies. Additionally, they created four other sr mutants and observed that all of them had shorter nighttime sleep durations, but not daytime sleep durations, compared to normal flies. These findings suggest that D-Ser plays a role in regulating nighttime sleep, and the researchers focused on studying its effect on this aspect of sleep thereafter.
