LCA of frozen food products versus their alternatives
Nomad Foods, Europe's leading frozen food company, partnered with PRé to conduct a life cycle assessment (LCA) study to compare the carbon footprint of their frozen products with alternative preservation methods. The study found that while some frozen products had higher carbon footprints than their alternatives, others had lower footprints. Factors contributing to these differences included manufacturing processes, packaging, storage, and consumer food waste. Overall, the study concluded that there was no general advantage or disadvantage to using frozen foods compared to alternative preservation methods, but it did support the idea that frozen products' lower food loss and waste rates could compensate for their additional energy use. The study provided valuable insights for Nomad Foods to reduce its environmental impact and informed decisions about developing a comprehensive sustainability strategy.
