Gender Differences in Body Evaluation: Do Men Show More Self-Serving Double Standards Than Women?

The study examined double standards in body evaluation in men and women. Women were found to have self-deprecating double standards, rating their own bodies less positively than others'. Men, on the other hand, had more positive ratings for their own bodies. The study suggests that cues indicating self-relevance (such as faces) may influence body ratings, leading to the emergence of double standards. Gender differences in applying these standards were found, with women being more critical of their own bodies and men being more positive about their own. The study concludes that considering an "identity bias" in body image theory may be beneficial.
